Why meta tags matter for SEO
Meta tags provide structured information about your web page to search engines and social media platforms. The title tag and meta description directly influence your click-through rate in Google search results. Well-crafted meta tags tell search engines what your page is about, who should see it, and how it should be displayed. Without proper meta tags, search engines may generate their own titles and descriptions, which often miss the key selling points of your content.
Open Graph and Twitter Card tags
Open Graph (og:) tags control how your page appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms. Twitter Card tags provide similar control for Twitter/X shares. Key tags include og:title, og:description, og:image (recommended 1200x630px), and twitter:card (summary_large_image for large previews). Without these tags, social platforms will attempt to scrape your page, often resulting in missing images, truncated titles, and generic descriptions.
Essential meta tags for every page
Every web page should include: a descriptive title tag (under 60 characters), a meta description (under 160 characters), a viewport meta tag for mobile responsiveness, charset declaration (UTF-8), Open Graph tags for social sharing, and a canonical URL to prevent duplicate content issues. The robots meta tag controls whether search engines index the page and follow its links. This generator creates all of these tags in the correct format.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the recommended title tag length?
Google displays approximately 50-60 characters of your title tag in search results. Keep your title concise, front-load important keywords, and include your brand name at the end separated by a pipe (|) or dash.
What size should my OG image be?
The recommended Open Graph image size is 1200x630 pixels with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio. This size works well across Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social platforms. Use PNG or JPEG format, and keep file size under 1MB.
Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter Card tags?
Twitter will fall back to Open Graph tags if Twitter Card tags are not present. However, including both gives you maximum control over how your content appears on each platform. At minimum, include og:title, og:description, og:image, and twitter:card.
